Back Pain

Back pain is a common problem affecting people of all ages. It can range from a dull ache to a sharp, debilitating pain. Understanding the causes and symptoms can help you manage your pain and seek the right treatment.

Causes of Back Pain

Mechanical Problems: Wear and tear on the spine, such as disc degeneration and facet joint issues, are leading mechanical causes of pain. Muscle strains and spasms also contribute.
Injuries: Sprains, fractures (often due to osteoporosis), and severe injuries from accidents can cause back pain.
Conditions and Diseases: Scoliosis, arthritis, spinal stenosis, and infections can all contribute to back pain.
Tumors: While uncommon, tumors in the spine or those spreading to the back can cause pain.
Stress: Emotional stress can worsen back pain by tensing muscles. Additionally, untreated depression, anxiety, and sleep issues can amplify pain perception.

Symptoms

  1. • Persistent ache or stiffness anywhere along the spine.
  2. • Sharp pain in the neck, upper, or lower back, especially during activity.
  3. • Chronic ache, particularly after prolonged sitting or standing.
  4. • Pain radiating down the buttocks, leg, and into the foot (sciatica).
  5. • Difficulty standing straight due to pain or muscle spasms.

Sciatic Pain (or) Sciatica

Sciatica is pain caused by a pinched or irritated sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. It runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down the leg. Sciatica pain typically follows this nerve path and can be worse than the back pain itself.

Treatments

Treatment options depend on the cause and severity of your pain. Common approaches include:

Non-surgical methods: Rest, physical therapy, medication (pain relievers, muscle relaxants), and injections (steroid injections to reduce inflammation).
Minimally invasive procedures: Spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency ablation (heating nerves to reduce pain signals), and ozone discectomy (injecting ozone into the disc to treat prolapses).
Surgery:
This is a last resort for severe pain that doesn’t respond to other treatments.
